The relations between humanities and technology indicate a transformation in the way we think and research. We aim to dig deep into the changes that Modernity has brought upon us and its implications. Our perspective doesn’t starts from prejudice against technology, but neither idealizes it. We consider that technology has not been neutral to the way we live and should be accounted for. This project seeks to inquire the relations between humanities and technology, pointing out radical changes in existence.
Our research group has focused in some questions from a critical perspective, tackling the nexus between philosophy and technology. What is the role of philosophy today? How philosophy and thought link with technologies and social media? How scientific developments provided to researchers in the humanities have modified work and dissemination of knowledge? Furthermore, we are interested in the way technology changes how we conceive knowledge, the structure of thought itself and the human experience.
We propose to use Twitter’s Data Grant to analyze a group of words that are present in the discussion about philosophy and technological advance. Terms such as “experience”, “technical”, “user”, “automatic”, “tool” constitute the corpus we intend to scan in Twitter’s historical database. Our primary objective will be to identify how these words are being used and the relations built between them. We expect to find within philosophical material with a relevant impact.
It is also of our interest how data visualization influences philosophical practice. We will develop as part of the project data visualizations, to explore what type of philosophy can be made with this kind of data processing. For example, we are considering to build a matrix diagram to relate words according to their co-occurrence. These tools will give a great input to the work done in our group. Together with the specific discoveries from the data output we expect to fuel discussions and produce significant public academic work to benefit the understanding of these issues.
Finally, it is relevant to point out we are interested to carry out this research with data in Spanish. Although, we are of the opinion that these topics have been scarcely studied from a philosophical approach, we think that it has been utterly neglected by non english researchers. Since we are a spanish speaking workgroup, we would like to probe the tendencies and uses of these concepts in our language. We think that this gives an edge and a differential value to our studies. This project is not only unusual among most philosophical lines of work, but also virtually non existing in spanish.
